Remove the Old Patio Furniture Straps

Begin by removing the damaged or worn vinyl straps from the furniture. Depending on the construction of the chair, you may need to cut the old straps and remove the existing rivets from the frame.

Use pliers carefully to pull the old fasteners from the mounting holes. Avoid damaging or enlarging the holes because the new rivets must fit securely.

Clean and Inspect the Patio Furniture Frame

Once the old straps have been removed, clean the exposed frame and all strap attachment areas.

Remove dirt, oxidation, pieces of old vinyl, and broken rivet material. Check each mounting hole to make sure it is open and ready to receive the new fastener.

This is also a good opportunity to inspect the frame for cracks, loose joints, corrosion, or other damage that should be repaired before installing the new straps.

Measure for Your Replacement Vinyl Straps

Proper measurement is important because patio furniture straps rely on tension to create a firm and comfortable seating surface.

Measure from one attachment point to the corresponding attachment point on the opposite side of the furniture. Follow the same path that the original strap used.

If your furniture uses straps that wrap around the frame, include the wrap configuration when determining the proper replacement length.

Prepare the Replacement Straps and Rivets

Organize your replacement straps before heating them. Confirm the strap length, width, mounting holes, and rivets.

If the straps have already been cut and punched to the correct size, arrange them in the order you intend to install them.

Keeping everything organized is especially helpful when restoring chaise lounges and larger pieces of patio furniture that may require many individual straps.

Heat the Vinyl Replacement Straps

Heating vinyl makes it temporarily more flexible and easier to stretch. Place the replacement straps in hot water according to the instructions supplied with your strap material.

Work carefully around hot water. Wear protective gloves when removing the straps and avoid overheating or directly burning the vinyl.

Attach the First Side of the Strap

Remove one softened strap from the hot water and install the appropriate rivet through the mounting hole at one end.

Insert the rivet into the corresponding hole in the furniture frame. Confirm that it is fully seated and securely positioned before stretching the opposite end.

For wrap-style furniture, rotate or wrap the vinyl around the frame in the same direction as the original installation.

Stretch the Vinyl Strap Across the Furniture

Hold the attached side securely and stretch the softened strap toward the opposite mounting point.

Keep the strap flat as you stretch it. Do not allow it to twist. A properly installed strap should look straight and consistent with the surrounding straps.

Insert the second rivet and secure the opposite end of the strap to the frame.

Allow the Straps to Cool and Check the Installation

Continue installing the remaining straps using the same method. Maintain even spacing and consistent tension throughout the chair, chaise lounge, or other furniture piece.

As the vinyl cools, it contracts and becomes tighter.

Once all straps have cooled completely, inspect the furniture. Confirm that every rivet is properly seated, all straps are straight, and the seating surface feels evenly supported.
